Satan / The Devil / Iblis

Satan / The Devil / Iblis
Satan fears God. The fact he thought he could be a god alongside God was part of God’s plan. Satan’s business contract with God is to take everyone, who does not worship God alone, with him to Hell.

Chapter 59, verses 16 - 17
They are like the devil: he says to the human being, “Disbelieve,” then as soon as he disbelieves he says, “I disown you. I fear God, Lord of the universe.” The destiny for both of them is the Hellfire, wherein they abide forever. This is the requital for the transgressors.

No human being is sent to Hell forcibly. Every single one of us has been given the chance to decide for ourselves if Satan can be a god alongside God. Most us of will chose to follow Satan. Satan is very good at his trade. He invites us along with him on his road trip to Hell and we freely follow behind him.

Chapter 15, verses 39 - 40
He said, “My Lord, since You have willed that I go astray. I will surely entice them on Earth; I will send them all astray. Except those among Your worshippers who are devoted absolutely to You alone.”

The name given to Satan in the Quran is Iblis. Satan and his descendants the jinn were created before humans from a form of smokeless fire. ’Iblis’ comes from the Greek word Diabolos, from which the English word for Devil is derived also.

Satan has no power over us, except to makes us think that the evil things, which he tempts us into doing, are permissible in life. Intoxication, gambling, worshipping idols and foretelling the future, the belief in ghosts and aliens are all abominations of Satan. God warns us to avoid these things so that we may succeed (5:90). Satan promotes hostility and hatred amongst people and causes us to forget to observe the prayers (5:91). How many of us give to charity, ‘on the day of harvest’, the day we receive our pay cheque? Satan causes us to forget to be charitable and that charity begins at home.

Chapter 20, verses 20 - 21
Satan found them readily fulfilling his expectations. They followed him, except a few believers. He never had any power over them. But we thus distinguish those who believe in the Hearafter from those who are doubtful about it. Your Lord is in full control of all things.

On the Day of Judgement Satan will totally disown us and the jinns who are our constant companions (41:25) will be witnesses against us. Every soul comes with a herder and a witness (50:21).

Chapter 14, verse 22
And the devil will say, after the judgement has been issued, “God has promised you the truthful promise, and I promised you, but I broke my promise. I had no power over you. I simply invited you and you accepted my invitation. Therefore, do not blame me, and only blame yourselves. My complaining cannot help you, nor can your complaining help me. I have disbelieved in your idolizing me. The transgressors have incurred a painful retribution.”
